Preparation and Updating of Oil Spill Emergency Response Plans
The Sharm El-Sheikh Oil Spill Response Center, affiliated with the Egyptian Ministry of Environment and operated by GreenPlus Environmental Solutions, plays a pivotal role in supporting petroleum companies operating in Egypt, particularly in the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. The center prepares and updates oil spill emergency response plans in line with national and international standards, most notably the requirements of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), as well as the international MARPOL and OPRC conventions.
The Center's Role in this Area Includes:
- Developing tiered emergency response plans (Tier 1 – Tier 2 – Tier 3) in coordination with companies, ensuring full readiness to handle oil spill incidents at all levels.
- Conducting environmental risk assessments to identify potential spill scenarios and estimate their ecological impact.
- Defining available resources and capabilities locally and regionally, and incorporating them into the plans to ensure rapid and effective execution.
- Integrating with the National Response Team (NRT) network, facilitating coordination with other centers when a Tier 3 response is required.
This role forms part of the center’s broader strategy to enhance prevention, preparedness, and rapid response to marine pollution incidents, while safeguarding sensitive marine and coastal resources in cooperation with all relevant stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.
